Easter is right around the corner and that means Jamaican Easter Bun is on the menu. This dessert is soft, sweet, and flavorful, making it the perfect snack when eaten with a slice of cheese, or by itself.
Jamaican Easter Bun
This bun is a sweet bread that is very popular in Jamaica. There are a number of different variations to the classic Jamaican Easter Bun Recipe. However, this recipe is our favorite. Wonderfully fragrant spices from cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg stand out in this bun recipe which enhances the flavor.
Traditionally, Jamaican bun is served with butter or hard yellow cheese, and is typically enjoyed around Easter. But, Jamaican bun can be made during any holiday. Other Jamaican holiday desserts are Jamaican Black Fruit Cake and sweet potato pudding.
Ingredients
- 1 cups port red wine ( or 1/2 cup if using soak fruit in wine)
- 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 eggs
- 2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup mixed peel
- 1/4 cup cherries
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon all spice
- 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond essence
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Glaze:
- 1 1/2 tablespoon honey
- 1 1/2 tablespoon butter
This recipe makes 2 – 1 pound buns
How To Make Easter Bun
- Mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice and salt. Set aside.
- Add raisins to a pot of water and soak over medium heat for about 10 mins.
- Add melted butter, eggs, sugar to a large bowl and mix with a hand mixer.
- Add in molasses, almond essence and vanilla to butter mixture.
- Separately, add mixed fruits, raisins and wine to a blender and pulse 2-3 times.
- Add mixed fruits to liquid mixture.
- Combine dry ingredients into liquids and mix with a mixer.
- Pour into a greased baking pan
- Bake at 350 F for approximately 1 hour
- Remove from oven and set aside
- Glaze. Melt butter and honey on stove. Glaze bun with a basting brush while hot
How To Glaze
- Make the glaze by combining equal parts of honey and butter in a saucepan.
- Turn on medium heat and stir until butter dissolves, and the two ingredients combine.
- Remove from heat and brush on top of Bun.
Note: Glaze the bun as soon as it comes out of the oven for best results.
How To Store ?
Tightly wrap bun in plastic wrap and store for up to 3 days at room temperature, or refrigerate for up to a week.
